About the sport

Teamwork, fitness, and a different way to experience DC.

Outrigger canoeing is a team paddling sport using canoes stabilized by an outrigger float (*ama*) connected by *iako*. Crews typically paddle six-person canoes (OC6) or single canoes (OC1), sitting in numbered seats with defined roles (steersperson in seat 6, timing and power set by seats 1–2). Strokes are synchronized to calls, with regular side changes to maintain efficiency and balance. Rooted in Polynesian voyaging traditions and deeply connected to Hawaiian culture, the sport emphasizes respect for the ocean (*kai*), safety, teamwork, and rhythm. NCA Outrigger welcomes people who want a challenging workout, learn paddling technique and water skills, and join a crew that trains together while honoring these traditions.
