DC Dragons

DC Dragons is the original dragon boat racing team in the DC area, formed in 1992. We are a co-ed team of paddlers and come from all levels of experience. We are proudly comprised of paddlers that range in age across multiple generations.

Within the DC Dragons team, we have multiple programs. While we all practice together, we separate based on the races we attend.

DC Dragons - Club Program
The Club Program blends the community and competitive aspects of NCAWPA. This fun-loving group welcomes anyone with an interest in paddling and a passion for team activities. Paddlers of all levels are welcome. These paddlers practice around 3 times per week and attend local or regional races, from Richmond, VA to Bucks County, NJ.

DC Dragons Performance
The Performance program focuses primarily on the competitive aspects of dragon boating. This program is comprised of our most motivated and experienced members, who must try out to earn a seat on the roster for a given race. Races tend to be larger, more competitive, and may involve travel to other regions, such as Canada or the West Coast. Paddlers interested in trying out for a Performance team typically practice four or more times per week in both dragon boats and outrigger canoes.

DC Over 40  (DC/40)
The DC Over 40 program brings together our paddlers aged 40 or over to race in the Masters category.

Team USA
DC Dragons has a long history of sending athletes to compete on Team USA for the IDBF World Championships. Our athletes have been selected to Team USA across all genders and age categories, from the U18 to the Senior C divisions.
  • In 2017, NCAWPA sent 15 athletes to compete in the 13th IDBF World Championships in Kunming, China.
  • In 2019, NCAWPA sent 17 athletes to compete in the 14th IDBF World Championships in Pattaya, Thailand

We welcome new paddlers of all experiences at any time! Want to try dragon boating?  Read more about the sport and come paddle with us.

See what we've been up to!
